Full Vs. Partial Dentures: Which Should I Choose?
Everyone wants a beautiful smile, but not everyone can achieve that goal naturally. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, something interferes with the work you do to keep your teeth healthy.

Everyone wants a beautiful smile, but not everyone can achieve that goal naturally. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, something interferes with the work you do to keep your teeth healthy. Injuries, diabetes, and more can sneak in and leave you in pain and with unhealthy teeth.

Fortunately, if this happens, you don’t have to accept it. You can take control of your smile with natural-looking dentures in El Dorado, Arkansas.

FULL VS. PARTIAL DENTURES

If you’re ready to dive into dentures, one of the things you’ll have to determine is whether you’ll need full or partial dentures. Dr. Paul Burns, your dentist for dentures, will help you choose the best route. However, the following is some basic information to help you understand the differences.

WHAT IS A FULL DENTURE?

A full denture replaces all of the teeth on the top or the bottom of a patient’s mouth. Getting a full denture is like placing a whole new smile in your mouth.

The plate is made to cover the entire gum area, according to whether you are getting uppers or lowers. If the denture is for the top, it will be made to cover the entire roof of the mouth. Bottom dentures are made to leave space for the tongue, so they are shaped like a “U.”

A full denture is best for someone who:

  • Is missing all of their upper or lower teeth, or they are all damaged or decayed.
  • Has half or more missing or damaged teeth and whose remaining teeth are not in great shape.

WHAT IS A PARTIAL DENTURE?

A partial denture is designed to replace some missing teeth. As a partial denture does not need to replace all teeth, the plate does not cover the entire gum area.

If, for example, let’s say you have two teeth in the back of your mouth and one at the front that needs to be replaced. The partial denture plate will only cover those teeth. It will be molded around any remaining teeth you have.

A bridge might be the answer if you have several teeth in a row that need to be replaced. These teeth will be attached by metal instead of a full acrylic plate.

A partial denture is best for someone who:

  • Has one or just a few missing or damaged teeth
  • And the remaining teeth are in good or decent shape
